English legal methods summer school - University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge English Legal Methods Summer School, which began in 1948, is run in partnership between the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education and the Faculty of Law.

The course presents the central aspects of English law as a working system for lawyers and law students from countries whose legal systems are not based on English common law.

Much of the emphasis is placed on the general structure of the law and legal methods, although detailed study of substantive law is not neglected.

Who should apply?

The English Legal Methods Summer School annually attracts in the region of 100 participants who come from a wide range of countries. The course is ideal for law students, both graduate and undergraduate, academic lawyers and those practising law in their own jurisdiction.

The course has been designed for participants whose background is in Civil law and who have little or no prior knowledge of the Common law. Owing to the nature of the academic content taught on the course, applications from countries whose legal systems are based on, or which have elements of English Common law will not be accepted. All participants must have completed a minimum of 1 year of their legal studies at undergraduate level.
