Avocats sans Frontieres (AsF)

Avocats Sans Frontières is an international non-governmental organisation mainly composed of lawyers and jurists, whose mission is to contribute to establishing a more just international and national society in which law stands at the service of the most vulnerable groups and individuals.

The organisation pursues its mandate through practical field work in the area of law and justice, and, in particular, the field of international legal aid and the provision of legal services. Avocats Sans Frontières has long-term projects in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, East-Timor and Rwanda.

Through its International Justice and Human Rights Programme, Avocats Sans Frontières looks to contribute to the fight against impunity for international crimes, to seeing victims restored in their dignity through their participation in trials, to the promotion of the right to an effective defence, and to the reconstruction of a Congolese judicial system.

Internship description
· Monitoring of situations and cases before the International Criminal Court;
· Participation in the programme’s advocacy activities linked to the work of the International Criminal Court;
· Research and analytical work on international justice issues;
· Participation in the other tasks deemed pertinent by the head of the programme;
· Occasional administrative tasks and translation.

Requirements
The intern is expected to:
· Hold a university degree in international criminal law, human rights law, international human rights law or a related field;
· Have good organisational and drafting skills, and be detail oriented;
· Be fluent in English or French (mother tongue) and excellent knowledge of the other;
· Have a particular interest in human rights, and more specifically in the North-South issue and
 in international and transitional justice;
· Be committed to carry out legal, and sometimes also non-legal, work in a frequently pressurised environment for the duration of his or her internship;
· A similar previous experience and knowledge in international justice issues, is a plus.

Duration
The position is for three months.

Conditions

Unfortunately, Avocats Sans Frontières is not in a position to offer any financial remuneration to interns. However, ASF does provide interns with a small daily transport/lunch allowance.
This means that the intern:
· Must be financially independent for the duration of his or her internship;
· Must hold valid residence and working papers for Belgium or the European Union;
· Is responsible for his or her own healthcare.
